Where to Stay in Antigua Guatemala: Best Areas & Hotels for First-Time Visitors

Choosing where to stay in Antigua Guatemala is easier than it looks.

You will find beautiful hotels all over the city, from restored colonial homes and tiny boutique properties to full-service hotels with pools, gardens and spas.

But for a first visit, I would care about one thing before almost everything else:

Can you walk easily to the places you actually came to Antigua to experience?

Antigua is a city you should explore on foot. The cobblestone streets, ruins, cafés, restaurants, markets and old churches are part of the experience, not just things you travel between.

I’m originally from Guatemala, and if a friend were visiting Antigua for the first time, I would usually tell them to stay in or very close to the historic center unless they specifically wanted a resort-style escape.

If you are following our 7-Day Guatemala Itinerary, this is also where I would spend the Antigua portion of the trip.

ANTIGUA HOTEL GUIDE
The Quick Answer
Best area: Historic Center, near Parque Central
Best historic hotel: Hotel Museo Spa Casa Santo Domingo
Best boutique stay: San Rafael Hotel
Best romantic hotel: El Convento Boutique Hotel
Best kid friendly hotel: Porta Hotel Antigua
Best for food & atmosphere: Mesón Panza Verde
Best luxury retreat: Villa Bokéh
Best budget / social stay: Maya Papaya

Best Area Overall: Antigua’s Historic Center

If this is your first trip, this is where I would start.

Staying within roughly a short walk of Parque Central puts restaurants, cafés, ruins, shops, the Santa Catalina Arch and many of Antigua’s main sights close enough that you do not have to organize transportation every time you want to do something.

San Rafael Hotel, for example, sits extremely close to the Santa Catalina Arch and within walking distance of Parque Central. Porta Hotel Antigua advertises its location as about a five-minute walk from the main plaza.

That matters more than it might seem when you are actually there.

You can wake up, get coffee, walk around before the streets become busy, return to the hotel if you need something and go back out again for dinner without turning every outing into a logistical exercise.

Who should stay here?

First-time visitors, couples, solo travelers, anyone staying only two or three nights, and anyone who wants to experience Antigua primarily on foot.

Who might not?

If you want large grounds, a resort atmosphere, total quiet or plan to spend significant time relaxing at the hotel itself, I would consider one of the options farther from the center.

The Hotels I Would Actually Consider

I do not think you need a list of 25 Antigua hotels.

You need a few genuinely different choices and a reason to choose each one.

Hotel Museo Spa Casa Santo Domingo

Best for: History, atmosphere and a memorable splurge

If you want the hotel itself to feel like part of your Antigua experience, Casa Santo Domingo is probably the most distinctive choice on this list.

The property occupies part of the former Santo Domingo convent complex and combines hotel rooms with historic architecture, museum spaces, gardens, a spa and other amenities. Current hotel listings place it about 500 meters from Antigua’s center.

This is the property I would choose if the question were:

“Where can I stay that feels uniquely Antigua rather than simply being a nice hotel in Antigua?”

It is not necessarily the least expensive option, and I would not book it only because you need somewhere to sleep.

I would book it because you actually want the property to be part of the trip.

My pick for: a special trip, couples, an anniversary or travelers willing to spend more for atmosphere.

San Rafael Hotel

Best for: Boutique charm in an almost unbeatable location

San Rafael is the opposite kind of luxury.

Instead of a large historic complex, this is a tiny boutique property with only a handful of rooms, set extremely close to Antigua’s famous Santa Catalina Arch. Current listings place it about 98 feet from the arch and within a short walk of Parque Central.

That location is a huge selling point for a first trip.

You are in the middle of Antigua without staying in something that feels like a large conventional hotel.

If you are the traveler who would rather have a beautiful courtyard, character and a small-property feel than a huge list of amenities, this is one of the first places I would look.

My pick for: couples and first-time visitors prioritizing location and boutique atmosphere.

El Convento Boutique Hotel

Best for: Romantic boutique stay

El Convento describes itself as being in the heart of Antigua and combines restored architectural character with courtyards, a rooftop terrace and boutique accommodations.

This is the one I would compare against San Rafael if you want something romantic and intimate.

You are still getting a central Antigua experience, but the appeal here is less about checking off an enormous amenity list and more about the setting.

For a couple spending a few nights in Antigua before heading toward Lake Atitlán, this fits the trip extremely well.

My pick for: couples, honeymoon-style trips and travelers who care about hotel atmosphere.

Porta Hotel Antigua

Best for: Families with kids, a pool and an easy first visit

Porta is probably the safest all-around recommendation on this list.

The hotel says it is about a five-minute walk from Antigua’s main plaza, and the property includes gardens, a pool, restaurant and spa-related amenities.

That combination makes it particularly interesting if you want central access without sacrificing the comforts of a larger hotel.

This is also one I would look at if traveling with children.

A tiny romantic boutique property may sound wonderful until everyone has been walking on cobblestones for six hours and somebody just wants to jump into a pool.

My pick for: families, first-time visitors and travelers wanting a traditional full-service hotel near the center.

Mesón Panza Verde

Best for: Food, romance and a quieter edge of the center

This one is interesting because I would recommend it almost as much for the overall experience as for the room.

Mesón Panza Verde describes itself as Antigua’s first luxury boutique hotel and gourmet restaurant. It sits toward the quieter end of Fifth Avenue and says the Central Plaza and Cathedral are approximately a five-minute walk away. The property also includes an art gallery, small pool and restaurant.

If your version of a good vacation involves a long dinner, wine, beautiful surroundings and walking back to your room afterward, this is a strong option.

It is a little different from choosing a hotel simply because it is as close as possible to Parque Central.

And that is the point.

My pick for: couples and travelers who care about food and atmosphere.

What If You Want Something Quieter?

There is nothing wrong with staying outside the historic core.

I just would not automatically choose it for a first two-night Antigua visit.

If your hotel is part of the vacation rather than simply your base, then the calculation changes.

Villa Bokéh

Best for: Luxury retreat and slowing down

Villa Bokéh sits outside Antigua’s busiest historic streets in a large garden setting. The property markets itself specifically as a retreat from the urban bustle, with gardens, pool, spa and restaurants. Leading Hotels of the World also describes it as just beyond Antigua’s cobbled streets while still only minutes from the colonial city.

This is where I would go if I wanted to spend part of the afternoon at the hotel.

That is fundamentally different from my advice for a typical first visit.

If you have only two days and plan to spend every hour walking Antigua, I would stay more centrally.

If you have more time, want a romantic splurge or simply want the hotel to feel like an escape, Villa Bokéh becomes much more interesting.

My pick for: luxury travelers, couples and anyone intentionally building downtime into the trip.

Best Budget Option: Maya Papaya

Antigua does not need to be an expensive destination.

Maya Papaya is a hostel-style option with both shared dorms and private rooms. Its official site says it is about four blocks from Parque Central, making it unusually convenient for travelers who want a social/budget stay without giving up a central location.

I particularly like that private rooms exist.

That means the property is not only for someone looking for the cheapest dorm bed possible.

You can still get the social hostel environment while keeping your own space.

My pick for: solo travelers, younger travelers, budget-conscious visitors and anyone who actually wants the social side of a hostel.

THE SOUGHT LIST PICKS
Where I Would Stay on a First Trip

If you gave me no other information and simply said, “This is my first time in Antigua. Where should I stay?” I would keep it simple: stay in the historic center, then choose based on what matters most to you.

Want the iconic Antigua experience?
Casa Santo Domingo
Want small, beautiful and extremely central?
San Rafael
Going as a couple?
El Convento
Traveling with kids or want a pool?
Porta Hotel Antigua
Food and atmosphere are part of the trip?
Mesón Panza Verde
Want a resort-style splurge?
Villa Bokéh
Want to spend less and meet people?
Maya Papaya

Do not overthink this. The hotel should support your Antigua trip, not become another planning project.

One Thing I Would Not Do

I would not stay far outside Antigua simply to save a small amount of money and then spend the trip coordinating rides back into the center.

There are situations where staying farther out makes sense.

Saving a few dollars while making every meal, coffee stop and evening walk less convenient is not necessarily one of them.

For a short first visit, location has value.

Getting From Guatemala City Airport to Your Hotel

Most international visitors will arrive through La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City.

If you are heading directly to Antigua, I would arrange the transfer before landing rather than trying to solve it with luggage after a flight.

Book a private transfer from Guatemala City Airport to Antigua →

Once you arrive, if you chose one of the central properties above, much of your Antigua visit can happen on foot.

My Final Recommendation

Antigua has enough beautiful hotels that choosing one can become unnecessarily complicated.

For most first-time visitors, I would narrow the search to the historic center and its immediate surroundings.

Then pick the hotel based on the trip you actually want.

You do not need the most luxurious hotel.

You do not need the hotel with the longest amenities list.

You need somewhere that makes Antigua easier and more enjoyable to experience.

And once you drop your bags?

Go walk.

Get coffee.

See the ruins.

Find a rooftop.

And yes, eventually go look at that McDonald’s.

I told you. 😂
